El artículo analiza cómo la inmigración influye en el comportamiento electoral, destacando que las percepciones —más que los efectos económicos reales— determinan las actitudes políticas. En España, pese a un largo periodo de apoyo social a la inmigración, el reciente aumento de flujos y la irrupción de discursos antiinmigración han modificado la opinión pública. No obstante, la evidencia muestra impactos limitados e incluso positivos de la inmigración sobre salarios, empleo y finanzas públicas. En consecuencia, el creciente rechazo político a la inmigración se debe atribuir a otros mecanismos menos explorados, como la tendencia a la concentración de la población inmigrante —que puede distorsionar la percepción del votante sobre su magnitud y composición— o los efectos de la inmigración sobre los precios.
