Resumen

La densidad urbana incrementa la productividad y la innovación, mejora el acceso a bienes y servicios, reduce las necesidades de viaje, fomenta edificios y formas de transporte energéticamente eficientes, y facilita la provisión de servicios compartidos. Sin embargo, la densidad también es sinónimo de congestión, hace más costoso vivir y moverse en las ciudades, y concentra la exposición a la contaminación y las enfermedades. En este artículo explicamos cómo medir la densidad y exploramos sus múltiples facetas como causa y a la vez consecuencia de la evolución de las ciudades. A continuación, evaluamos si las políticas públicas deben tratar de modificar la densidad urbana y cómo.
